What is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is one or more prosthetic teeth made from porcelain, ceramics, zirconium, or composite materials suspended between two dental crowns or dental implants, and it serves to replace a single or several sequential missing teeth. Almost anyone with sufficiently healthy gums and teeth can become a good dental bridge candidate, but, if you aren’t ready to receive the appliance yet, you may still be able to later after undergoing preliminary treatments to resolve issues like tooth decay and gum disease.

Types of Dental Bridges

The type of bridge that works best for you depends upon the strength and health of your remaining teeth as well as the location of the gap in your smile.  If you have lost many teeth, we may recommend a removable partial denture or an implant-supported prosthesis. During your consultation, one of our dentists will carefully inspect your mouth and review your medical history before recommending the appliance that would be best to address your needs.

Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional bridge is a line of one or several artificial teeth supported by two healthy natural teeth wearing dental crowns on either side of the gap to create a strong and durable restoration. With proper care, a fixed bridge may last at least 8 to 15 years.

Implant Bridge

If the teeth on either side of a gap cannot host crowns, dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone may offer a solid alternative. An implant bridge is mounted on these titanium posts to create a strong and long-lasting hold that provides maximum stability and chewing power. While the bridge itself will eventually have to be replaced, it can last much longer than traditional appliances, and dental implants can last for a lifetime if they receive excellent care.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge may be a great way to address a host of oral health problems such as:

  • The remaining teeth shifting out of alignment after tooth loss
  • The diminished confidence that can come with a compromised smile
  • Trouble speaking clearly or eating comfortably
  • Increased risk of injuries to unprotected gum tissue
